DVD and Blu-ray Releases for May 22nd, 2012

May 22nd, 2012

It's a strange week on the home market. There are not a lot of films on this week's list, but there are more first run releases than normal, while we are also moving into the summer TV schedule, so a lot of those shows are getting home market releases this week, in preparation for their upcoming seasons. The list is top-heavy, not very deep, and lacks contenders for for Pick of the Week. The Secret World of Arrietty is the best release and the Blu-ray looks amazing, but there are not a lot of extras to be found. Likewise, Sherlock: Season Two is a great show, but the DVD and Blu-ray don't have a lot of extras, plus the price-per-minute is rather high for a TV on DVD release. I have high hopes for The Woman in Black, but the screener is late. In the end I'm going with The Secret World of Arrietty, but the other two are Honorable Mentions. More...

Featured DVD Review: Daltry Calhoun

May 20th, 2012

When Daltry Calhoun was made, Johnny Knoxville was most famous for being the host / star / biggest idiot of Jackass, the TV show. He had made a number of movies, but none had earned overall positive reviews. (He was mostly a supporting character in these movies, so you couldn't blame him for this.) There was some buzz that this film would finally break that streak, especially with Quentin Tarantino acting as producer, but it was not to be. In fact, for a while, it was his worst reviewed film. Looking back, is it really that bad? Or does it have enough positive qualities to at least be worth a rental? More...

DVD Releases for February 7, 2006 - Part 1

February 6th, 2006

It's a massively busy week in the world of DVD releases, so much so that I'm dividing the column up into two parts with the second part being published tomorrow. I'm trying to organize it alphabetically, (although I'll probably miss a few today and add them tomorrow), but this presents a small problem as none of today's list are really DVD Pick of the Week material. As for tomorrow's list, both Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit - Buy from Amazon and Waiting... - Unrated Edition are contenders for DVD Pick of the Week. You'll have to stay tuned to see which one wins. (Hint: probably both.) More...

Movie Website Updates for September 16 - September 22

September 22nd, 2005

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. Here the list of this week's releases, a couple of new sites and few updates. This week's list is a little shorter than usual partially because I'm moving today and had to complete the list on Wednesday. Because of this there was no site that really stood out as deserving the Weekly Website Award; perhaps next week there will be two winners. More...
