Home Market Releases for July 3rd, 2018

July 3rd, 2018

Blockers

We are deep into the summer doldrums on the home market. Blockers is the biggest first-run release of the week, and also the best. The DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack is a contender for Pick of the Week, thanks in part to the lack of competition. It’s not the only contender, as both Dietrich and von Sternberg in Hollywood: The Criterion Collection and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Set 2: Stardust Crusades Arc are also worthy of that title. In the end, I rolled a dice and Blockers came out on top. More...

Dark Matter: Season Three

Summer is the worst time of the year for the home market and this week is no exception. The “biggest” new release of the week is Pacific Rim: Uprising, but it is not worth picking up. There are a few contenders for Pick of the Week, including the final season of Dark Matter; a dark comedy, The Death of Stalin; and an Anime release, Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World. In the end, I went with Dark Matter as the Pick of the Week. More...

Theater Averages: 2001 is Louder than the Competition

June 12th, 2018

Hearts Beat Loud

2001: A Space Odyssey returned to the top of the theater average chart earning an average of $18,969 in 5 theaters. The best new release was Hearts Beat Loud, which was right behind with an average of $18,631 in four theaters. Won’t You Be My Neighbor? was next with an average of $16,394 in 29 theaters. It won’t need to expand to earn more than $1 million domestically, and it will expand over the coming weeks. The final film in the $10,000 club is the overall box office leader, Ocean’s 8, with an average of $10,038. More...

Theater Averages: Avengers Goes to the Dogs

May 3rd, 2018

Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War had the weekend’s best theater average at $57,599. However, this isn’t the best theater average of the year, as Isle of Dogs opened with an average of $60,011. Disobedience was close behind with an average of $47,479 in five theaters. The final film in the $10,000 club was Let the Sunshine In with an average of $19,850 in two theaters. More...

Theater Averages: Stories Doesn’t Give Up the Ghost

April 25th, 2018

Ghost Stories

Ghost Stories was the only film in the $10,000 club earning $11,972 in its lone theater over the weekend. Bharat Ane Nenu did come close with an average of $9,180 in just over 300 theaters. More...

Theater Averages: Box Office is Full of Grace

April 18th, 2018

Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami

Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami had the best opening of the limited releases earning an average of $18,724 in three theaters. The only other film in the $10,000 Club was The Rider, which earned an average of $14,081, also in three theaters. More...

Weekend Estimates: Rampage Squeaks Out a Win

April 15th, 2018

Rampage

Rampage isn’t exactly living up to its name this weekend, as it heads for a $34.5 million debut—just enough to keep A Quiet Place in second place, with $32.6 million in its second outing (down a very respectable 35% from its debut). As might be expected, international markets are proving friendlier to Rampage than the US and Canada, and it’s off to a healthy $114.1 million start in 61 territories, according to Warner Bros.’ Sunday morning estimate. More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Who Will be the Limited Releases’ Saving Grace

April 13th, 2018

Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami

There are not many limited releases that have a shot at box office success on this week’s list. The biggest ones are either opening too wide, like Beirut, or are already playing on VOD, like Borg vs. McEnroe, Wildling, and others. This leaves Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami as the film I think has the best shot at earning some measure of mainstream success. More...

More...

Home Market Releases for June 19th, 2018

June 19th, 2018

More...
