Mean Girls

After schooling its competition at the domestic box office last weekend, Mean Girls will add 35 locations in its second week, propelling the film into a solid 3,826 theaters. The pop culture teen comedy took in a robust $28.64 million over its opening weekend and currently enjoys a six-day total of $37.14 million. The latest standings put the movie nearly $16 million ahead of The Beekeeper, the second-place finisher, which also made its debut last weekend. Mean Girls likewise outperformed its original incarnation, as the 2004 film scored $24.43 million over its opening session.

The only new wide release this week, I.S.S. follows a group of three astronauts and three cosmonauts working skillfully together until war breaks out between the two countries. Both groups must then follow orders from Earth to take control of the space station by any means necessary. Beginning its run in 2,420 cinemas, the tense thriller stars Ariana DeBose, Chris Messina, John Gallagher Jr., and Pilou Asbæk. The feature is directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, who helmed the 2017 biographical drama, Megan Leavey as well as the 2019 biographical drama, Our Friend.

Rounding out the top five this week is The Beekeeper, increasing its location count by 27 for a total of 3,330 theaters. The Jason Statham action flick currently owns a six-day total of $21.61 million at the domestic box office while scoring just over $6 million from overseas showings. Occupying the third place spot this week is previous chart topper Wonka. The $500m+ worldwide earner loses 210 theaters this week, but is still widely accessible in 3,136 movie houses. Coming in just behind Wonka is the animated feature, Migration, showing in 3,081 venues. Lastly, current third-place holder at the daily box office Anyone But You, is showing in a still wide 2,928 locations.

Not to be forgotten, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is returning to theaters this weekend. The blockbuster film, which earned over $682 million globally last summer will be available in 466 premium large screen and IMAX locations in celebration of Columbia Pictures’ 100th anniversary.
