The Marvels

After a rather lackluster week at the box office, this weekend should see a definite uptick, brought on largely by the release of The Marvels. Three other wide releases also make their cinematic debuts, including It’s a Wonderful Knife, Journey to Bethlehem, and Saturday’s release of Bollywood action feature, Tiger 3.

The Marvels is the follow-up to 2019’s Captain Marvel, a film which debuted to over $153 million, and went on to score well over $1 billion worldwide, with a large portion of that coming from international viewings. The film’s opening count of 4,030 theaters marks the first time a film has opened in over 4,000 locations since Barbie launched in 4,243 cinemas back on July 21st. The latest installment follows Captain Marvel as she has reclaimed her identify from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence, only to discover unintended consequences that have her shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe.

Releasing in 2,002 venues this week is the faith-based feature, Journey to Bethlehem. The live-action Christmas musical adventure tells the story of Mary and Joseph and the birth of Jesus by weaving classic Christmas melodies with humor, faith, and new pop songs in a retelling of the greatest story ever told.

Also opening wide this week is the horror-comedy Christmas film, It’s a Wonderful Knife. Making its way into 923 cinemas, the film is a spin on the Christmas classic, It's a Wonderful Life, and follows a woman who, after saving her town from a psychotic killer on Christmas Eve, finds herself in an alternate universe in which she doesn't exist, therefore allowing the killer to roam free.

Set after the events of Pathaan, Tiger 3, finds Tiger framed as enemy number 1 and he must hunt with a vengeance to clear his name. Set to open in 750 locations, the movie will be available in standard, IMAX, 4DX and other premium formats.

After opening in six locations on October 27th, The Holdovers expands into 778 movie houses this week. The 1970’s-set comedy-drama currently holds a 13-day total of $1.02 million after expanding from six to 64 theaters last week.

Rounding out the top five this week is current box office champ, Five Nights at Freddy’s, logging in 3,691 locations. Occupying the third-widest release spot this week is Killers of the Flower Moon, clocking in with 3,357 locations, and lastly, TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR comes in as the fourth-largest release, still showing in a solid 2,848 venues.

Next week should be a fun one for moviegoers as four new wide releases hit theaters ahead of Thanksgiving. At this point the widest of those appears to be Trolls: Band Together, expected to debut in approximately 3,800 locations after having opened in select international territories in mid-October. Also releasing for the first time is The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Releasing in about 3,700 theaters, the film is a prequel to the original film series, and serves as the fifth installment in the The Hunger Games franchise. Also opening in wide release next week is Sony Pictures’ slasher pic, Thanksgiving, projected to arrive in approximately 2,600 theaters. Lastly, biographical sports film Next Goal Wins looks to debut in about 2,000 movie houses.
