Theater counts: Black Adam easily repeats while Prey for the Devil arrives for Halloween

To no great surprise, Black Adam will once again be the week’s widest release in North America as the superhero feature will retain all of the 4,402 theaters from its debut weekend in its second outing. The Dwayne Johnson movie snagged a very respectable $67 million over its first three days and has settled in with just over $80 million in domestic earnings and a global take of nearly $156 million so far. This week sees two new films opening in wide release: the pre-Halloween horror flick Prey for the Devil and Call Jane.

Debuting in 2,980 locations, Prey for the Devil is the widest of the two new releases this week. The supernatural horror movie stars Jacqueline Byers as Sister Ann, a young nun who is trained to perform exorcisms, and soon finds herself in a battle for the soul of a young girl whom she believes to be possessed by the same demon that tormented her own mother years ago. Elizabeth Banks’ Call Jane is a true-life drama set in 1968 Chicago as suburban housewife Joy (Banks) must navigate an all-male medical establishment unwilling to terminate her pregnancy when it becomes life-threatening. The film is directed by Phyllis Nagy and co-stars screen veteran Sigourney Weaver.

While there are only two new wide releases making their theatrical debuts, Till and TÁR are making their nationwide expansion this week as the former adds 1,954 locations for a total of 2,058 cinemas, while the latter is now available for viewing in 1,087 movie houses. The top five widest releases this week is almost a mirror image of last week, the only exception is Smile and Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile trading places with the former edging out the latter for the fourth spot this week. Once again Ticket to Paradise and Halloween Ends occupy the second and third slots with 3,692 and 3,419 locations, respectively. Worthy of mention, The Bad Guys jumps back into theaters this week, available nationwide in 1,478 locations.

Arriving in six locations this week before its nationwide expansion in 800+ theaters next week is the coming-of-age period drama, Armageddon Time. The film stars Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, Banks Repeta, Jaylin Webb and screen legend Anthony Hopkins. Also opening in limited release this week is the 1950s-Manhattan-set drama, Please Baby Please and the Sicilian-set drama, A Chance Encounter. The former will open in 16 locations while the latter will release in five theaters.

Other movies making their theatrical debuts this week include music documentaries, Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues and Let There Be Drums as well as the action features The Ambush and The System.

Looking ahead to next week we see the North American launch of Crunchyroll’s latest anime feature to hit theaters with the Japanese fantasy action film, One Piece Film: Red. While we don’t yet have a theater count, it is expected to land in over 2,000 theaters. As previously mentioned, Armageddon Time will expand in over 800 theaters beginning next Friday, November 4.
