Theater counts: Moonfall and jackass forever end Spider-Man’s phenomenal run as widest release
February 3, 2022
While Spider-Man: No Way Home is still far from finished at the box office, the mega-hit has finally been overtaken on our theater count list. The film currently enjoys a worldwide total of over $1.7 billion. This week however ushers in two new wide releases in jackass forever and Moonfall, arriving in 3,604 and 3,446 locations respectively.
The fifth overall installment in the Jackass franchise, jackass forever is directed by Jeff Tremaine and stars regulars, Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Wee-Man, as well as a slew of new faces and special appearances to the reality-comedy film. The film sits on a $10 million budget and comes from Paramount Pictures. The studio also still has Scream charting near the top of the box office. Also opening in wide release this week is Moonfall. The $146-million sci-fi disaster film is helmed by Roland Emmerich and contains a plethora of Hollywood star-power, headlined by Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, and John Bradley. Moonfall will also be available in IMAX locations. Lastly, The Wolf and the Lion opens in an estimated 1,005 theaters. The Canadian set animal adventure film stars Molly Kunz, who returns to her late grandfather’s cabin and finds herself taking care of a wolf cub and lion cub who grow up together as brothers.
Once again, there is a good lineup of smaller movies this week. Coming to theaters this week is the Norwegian comedy, The Worst Person in the World, which chronicles four years in the life of Julie, a young woman who navigates the troubled waters of her love life and struggles to find her career path, leading her to take a realistic look at who she really is. Also arriving in limited release is the documentary, Breaking Bread. The film explores the A-Sham Festival, a groundbreaking food festival where Arab and Jewish chefs work in tandem to create mouthwatering dishes in order to foster social change.
Looking ahead to next week we see the release of Universal Pictures’s Marry Me and 20th Century Studios’ Death on the Nile, set to open in an estimated 3,500 and 3,200 locations respectively. Marry Me, which stars Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson will also be available to stream on Peacock the same day as its theatrical release.
