Weekend estimates: Croods still rule

December 13, 2020

The Croods: A New Age

The Croods: A New Age continues to dominate at the box office (relatively speaking) this weekend, with Universal projecting a weekend box office of $3.01 million for a total of $24.26 million to date. Half Brothers is outperforming expectations in second place with a projected $490,000 sophomore weekend, down just 30% from its last outing.

As we already discussed when issuing the weekend predictions, the total box office for the weekend among all movies combined is looking exceptionally weak, partly due to a lack of new releases. The total amount reported so far this weekend is a little over $5 million, and might end up being the worst weekend since August 14, when The Spongebob Movie and Unhinged opened in Canada the weekend before their United States debut.

That total comes with an asterisk, however, because Warner Bros. has several re-releases in the market but is only reporting grosses for Tenet. According to unofficial estimates we’ve seen, Elf, The Polar Express, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and Wonder Woman would all be in the top 10 if Warner Bros. reported their numbers. Their combined box office this weekend is around $1 million, which is a big chunk of the market right now (which is ironic, considering how the big news in the business right now is about Warner Bros. spurning theaters for HBO Max).

International Markets

The Croods: A New Age will earn $8.438 million internationally this weekend, according to Universal’s tracking, for totals of $52.084 million abroad, and $76.344 million worldwide. Its cume in China stands at $45.909 million.

The Invisible Man will earn $766,000 this weekend to raise its international total rises to $72.393 million and it has $142.803 million worldwide. Trolls World Tour will make $361,000 this weekend for $44.759 million internationally and $50.4 million worldwide. Freaky will pick up $258,000 from 32 territories and has a total of $14.195 million worldwide now.

Warner Bros. has three films playing in international territories. Tenet will earn $739,000 worldwide this weekend for a global total of $361.3 million. The Witches takes its international total to $22 million with $2.2 million from all markets this weekend, led by a $1.2 million opening in Australia. Finally, Superintelligence will earn a projected $342,000 from 11 territories for a total of $2.2 million to date.
