Theater Averages: Late Night Gets Off to an Early Start

June 13, 2019

Late Night

2019 set a new record on the theater average chart, as Late Night got off to the fastest start for a limited release so far earning an average of $61,576 in four theaters during its opening weekend. This is better than Echo in the Canyon managed just two weeks ago, although Avengers: Endgame still owns the overall record with an average of $76,601. The Last Black Man in San Francisco also did incredibly well with an average of $33,610 in seven theaters. This Ones for the Ladies was well back with an opening of $13,688 in one theater. Meanwhile, the overall number one film, The Secret Life of Pets 2, was the final film in the $10,000 club with an average of $10,229.

The best of the rest of the new limited releases was Framing John Delorean with an opening of $6,991 in one theater. This is an excellent result for a film playing on VOD. There was a traffic jam next with four films within 10% of each other, starting with Bharat with an average of $3,974 in just over 300 theaters. This is even more impressive, because it was a Wednesday debut, so its weekend numbers were lower as a result. Chasing the Dragon 2 was right behind with an average of $3,811 in 16 theaters. The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil was even closer with an average of $3,745 in 21 theaters, while Papi Chulo managed an average of $3,629 in two. Pavarotti struggled with an average of $3,001 in 48 theaters. Finally we have Funan, which missed the Mendoza Line with $1,871 in one theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Bharat earned more than $1 million over the weekend and nearly $2 million during its five-day opening. Obviously it reached the $1 million milestone in the process.
  • The Biggest Little Farm reached $2 million before the weekend and it has an excellent shot at $3 million.
