Weekend Estimates: Endgame Earns $350 million in Domestic Debut

April 28, 2019

Avengers: Endgame

As expected, Avengers: Endgame is dominating the weekend with an estimated $350 million. Unsurprisingly, this sets a new record for opening weekend, topping the previous champion, Avengers: Infinity War, by just close to $100 million. It is also enough to push the film into ninth place on the M.C.U. chart after just three days of release. Its international numbers are looking even better, at a jaw-dropping $859 million. More on that coming shortly…

Captain Marvel was the only holdover to benefit from Avengers: Endgame’s record-smashing debut. Estimates have the film dipping just 11% over the weekend landing at $8.1 million for a total of close to $413.6 million after eight weeks of release.

If estimates hold, then The Curse of La Llorona will fall 72% to just $7.50 million over the weekend. This is a really sharp decline, even for a horror movie, even when you take into account the competition. However, the film will top $40 million by the end of the weekend, which is very likely more than it cost to make and advertise, so Warner Bros. will still be happy with this result.

Breakthrough is holding on better than most films, as it fell just 44% according to estimates to $6.3 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $26.1 million. The film is doing well for a faith-based film and will end up as one of the biggest hits in the genre for the past couple of years.

Shazam is being hit hard by the competition down 66% to an estimated $5.52 million. However, even if it doesn’t bounce back next weekend and indeed sees its theater count take a serious hit, it will still come close to $150 million, which is more than enough to break even.
