Endgame Starts Out with $169 Million From Wednesday International Openings

April 25, 2019

Avengers: Endgame

Everyone knows it’ll be big, but exactly how big the opening weekend for Avengers: Endgame will be is beginning to get clearer, as Disney just announced $169 million in receipts on Wednesday from 25 “material markets.” That includes a $107.5 million opening day in China (of which $28.2 million came from preview screenings on Tuesday). It set all-time single day records in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines, and opening day records in Malaysia, Singapore, the Netherlands, Greece, and Egypt.

Obviously, China is dominating the news. Among other things, it’s the second-best day for any movie anywhere ever, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $119 million debut day in the US and Canada. Excluding previews, it’s also the second-best for a single day, behind Monster Hunt 2, which managed $97 million without any previews on its opening day in China. Endgame picked up $79.3 million without previews there.

The film’s performance from other territories looks modest in comparison to China, but bear in mind that these are virtually all records of one kind or another, and that Endgame is beating Infinity War in every country so far when opening on the same day. Its top territories are, Korea with $8.4 million, Australia $7.0m, France $6.0m, Italy $5.8m, Germany $5.6m, Philippines $3.9m, Hong Kong $2.7m, Taiwan $2.6m, Indonesia $2.5m, Thailand $2.4m, Malaysia $2.0m, and $12.6 million from other territories.

The film is number 1 in all markets, unsurprisingly, and is performing on average 52% better than Endgame in the 13 territories where a direct comparison is possible. At this pace, a $1 billion global opening weekend looks very much on the cards.
