Home Market Releases for February 12th, 2019

Shoplifters

It’s a shallow week on the home market. That said, Bohemian Rhapsody was a monster hit, especially internationally. It isn’t a Pick of the Week contender, but we do have a trio of contenders: At Eternity’s Gate, Audition, and Shoplifters. It’s a close race, but Shoplifters came out on top.

American Vandal: Season One - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This series is a parody of true crime documentary shows, but instead of looking in on a murder case, it is about a high school prankster. Is the show worth checking out? Or is the humor too juvenile to hold your attention? Read our review for my opinion.

At Eternity’s Gate - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film is Oscar bait, but its reviews are not quite award-worthy; however, Willem Dafoe’s performance is award-worthy and that helps this movie become a Pick of the Week contender. Extras include an audio commentary track and a trio of very short featurettes. That’s not a lot, but still good for a limited release.

Audition: Special Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
One of Takashi Miike more accessible movies, but it is still quite brutal at times. There are plenty of extras, including some new to this edition. For example, the archival audio commentary is here, as well as a newly recorded one. It is definitely worth picking up for fans of the director, but it might be a little too much for some to take.

Bohemian Rhapsody - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand (Movie Only), Video on Demand (With Extras)
The screener arrived and was technically not late, but too late to get the review done. I’ll get to the review ASAP.

Dragons: Race to the Edge - Seasons 1 & 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Another home market release coming out to take advantage of the How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World theatrical release. There have been more than a few of these to come out the past couple of weeks and most have sold really well.

The Front Runner - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film is busted Oscar-bait. It was clearly made to win awards, but its reviews were just below the overall positive level. Extras include an audio commentary track, making of featurette, and deleted scenes. It’s worth a rental, if you like the cast and political satire, but that’s as enthusiastic as I can get.

Hallmark Channel Original Movie Double-Shot
Once Upon a Prince - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
Royal Matchmaker - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Just in time for Valentine’s day, there are two Hallmark Channel original movies, both of which are romances.

Nobody’s Fool - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
The latest from Tyler Perry. Like most of his non-Medea films, this one struggled at the box office. It’s better than its Tomatometer Score would indicate, but that’s not saying much.

Rick and Morty: Seasons 1-3 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I put in a request to review this Blu-ray, but the screener has not arrived. It is, for the most part, a great show. In fact, one could argue the worst part of the show is some of its more “committed” fans.

Sailor Moon R The Movie: The Promise of the Rose - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the most popular Anime franchises in the west and inarguably the most well known of the Magical Girl subgenre of Anime. This movie, originally released in 1993, earned excellent reviews and is certainly worth owning for fans of the franchise.

Shoplifters - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
One of the best-reviewed films of 2018. It even picked up an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign-language Film. It’s not going to win, but it was nominated. It is only coming out on DVD, but it is still a Pick of the Week contender.
