Weekend Estimates: Spider-Man is too much for just one Universe

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Sony’s estimates have Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse earning $35.4 million over the weekend. Its reviews and its A plus from CinemaScore should both helps its legs, as will the upcoming holidays. On the other hand, it does have direct competition next weekend, more or less. Aquaman will attack it from the super hero side of things, while Mary Poppins Returns will take from its family film side. That said, with a start like this, $100 million domestically is practically guaranteed, while $150 million is a solid goal to aim for.

The Mule’s opening weekend estimates came in at $17.21 million, which matches our predictions perfectly. The film cost $50 million to make and it will have no trouble matching that domestically. In fact, due to the more mature target audience Clint Eastwood brings in, its acceptable reviews, and an A minus from CinemaScore, it could reach $100 million domestically. After all, this time of year tends to produce really long legs.

Dr Seuss’ The Grinch is projected to earn $11.58 million over the weekend for a six-week total of $239.29 million. It’s been in the top five for more than a month, so there’s not much more that needs to be said at this point. Internationally, it made $23.3 million, but this includes two major markets it struggled in: China (fourth place with $2.91 million) and Japan (fifth place with $2.35 million).

If the studio estimates hold, then Ralph Breaks the Internet will match expectations perfectly with $9.59 million over the weekend, which would push its running tally to $154.5 million. The film had no major market openings on the international front, so there’s not much to say there. It does have five major market openings over the next three weeks, so that will change dramatically.

Mortal Engines will only manage $7.5 million during its opening weekend. Normally films that open this time of year have excellent legs, but its terrible reviews and its B minus from CinemaScore will likely prevent that. It is doing better internationally, but that’s a relative term. It managed fourth place in France with $1.64 million on 502 screens, but opened in fifth place in the U.K. with $1.59 million in 404 screens. Universal will lose a ton of money on this $100 million flop.

There was one limited release of note, as If Beale Street Could Talk is estimated to earn close to $220,000 in just four theaters. This won’t give it the best theater average of the year, but it is certainly among the top performers on debut.
