September 19, 2018

The Nun

There was a close three-way race for top spot on the international chart, but The Nun was able to retain first place with $34.1 million on 12,107 screens in 62 markets for totals of $144.8 million internationally and $229.9 million worldwide. The film’s biggest new market of the weekend was Belgium, where it made $1.42 million on just 86 screens. This was easily enough to earn first place there and was the biggest opening for the franchise. The film’s biggest holdover was in Brazil with $3.5 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $12.6 million.

The Predator opened in second place with $30.7 million in 72 markets. The film opened in first place in Russia with $4.26 million on 1,307 screens. It earned $3.15 million in 553 theaters in the U.K., which is lower than its opening here, relatively speaking.

L Storm opened in first place in China and third place internationally with $29.28 million over the weekend, $29.62 million including previews.

Mission: Impossible—Fallout fell to fourth place with $15.9 million in 57 markets for totals of $544.8 million internationally and $760.9 million worldwide. The film is coasting on holdovers, so it won’t last in the top five for long. That said, it is the biggest hit of the franchise.

Crazy Rich Asians rounded out the top five with $7.9 million on 2,371 screens in 29 markets, for totals of $38.5 million internationally and $188.0 million worldwide. The film had a very impressive opening in Indonesia with $2.2 million on 481 screens. Meanwhile, it only managed third place in the U.K. with $2.1 million on 532.

Incredibles 2 had no debuts this weekend, which left it outside of the top ten with $3.6 million in 25 markets for totals of $577.8 million internationally and $1.183 billion worldwide. The film opens in Italy this weekend and Germany next weekend, so it should be able to top $1.2 billion shortly and overtaking Iron Man 3 for 16th place all-time is the ultimate goal.
