International Box Office: The Nun is Number One with $79.3 million

September 12, 2018

The Nun

The Nun topped the chart with $79.3 million on 15,835 screens in 60 markets for a global opening weekend of $133.1 million. This might be enough to give Warner Bros. a small amount of profit already. It depends on how much the studio will end up spending on advertising. The film’s biggest opening was in Mexico, where it earned $10.5 million on 3,967 screens. It also earned impressive first place debuts in Indonesia ($7.6 million on 1,289 screens); Brazil ($6.6 million on 1,235 screens); and India ($5.2 million on 1,603 screens). It earned first place in the U.K., but with $5.3 million on 593 screens, which is quite a bit weaker than its debut here, relative to the size of the two markets. This is also true of its first place, $2.7 million debut on 326 screens in Australia.

Mission: Impossible—Fallout slipped to second place with $38.6 million in 65 markets over the weekend for totals of $514.5 million internationally and $726.7 million worldwide. The film fell 59% in China to $31.44 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $136.61 million. A 59% decline is actually quite good for a sophomore stint in China. Fallout is now the biggest worldwide hit in the franchise and this is a major reason to celebrate for Paramount, which has had a rough few years.

The Meg earned third place with $11.3 million on 7,722 screens in 67 markets for totals of $360.4 million internationally and $492.0 million worldwide. The film opened in first place in Japan with $3.3 million on 381 screens. The film is just about to reach $500 million worldwide, which is more than enough to break even early in the film’s home market run.

Searching reached the top five for the first time with $7.90 million on 1,917 screens in 12 markets for totals of $18.14 million internationally and $32.50 million worldwide. The film rose 61% in South Korea earning $5.79 million on 1,096 screens for a two-week total of $13.03 million.

Ant-Man and the Wasp fell to fifth with $7.0 million in 16 markets for totals of $395.4 million internationally and $610.2 million worldwide. It has run out of new markets, but it is already 18% above the first film’s total, so Disney has to be happy with this total.

Incredibles 2 continues its run with $5.7 million in 25 markets for totals of $572.2 million internationally and $1.177 million worldwide. Incredibles 2 has topped Minions and is now in 17th place on the all-time worldwide chart. The film has yet to open in Italy and Germany, so Iron Man 3’s position on the chart is not safe.
