Friday Estimates: Fallout on top Friday with Franchise Record

July 28, 2018

Mission: Impossible—Fallout

Mission: Impossible—Fallout earned $23.0 million on Friday, putting it on pace for an opening weekend of $58 million, according to Paramount. This is the fastest start in the franchise; although given the age of the franchise and the ticket price inflation, that’s much less impressive. The film’s reviews are among the best we’ve seen from a wide release this year, while it earned an A from CinemaScore, so its legs should be long. That said, this is weaker than we predicted. I really thought the reviews would translate into more ticket sales.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! landed in second place with $4.8 million. That’s almost exactly 66% less than its opening Friday, meaning it will have trouble matching our $18 million prediction. Universal is predicting just over $15 million over the weekend and that would keep it on pace for $100 million, if it doesn’t see its theater count take a significant hit next week. If it can avoid that fate, then it should stick around in theaters until the end of summer. It’s not like there’s a lot of prime competition coming out after the first week of August. If it does collapse next weekend, then it could be out of the top ten just a couple of weeks later and won’t see the long trailing legs that sometimes occur at this time of year.

Teen Titans Go! To the Movie earned $4.25 million on Friday, but that’s not what we were hoping for. It will still earn more than $10 million over the weekend, which means it will take just three days to match its production budget, but this is still disappointing after it earned such strong reviews. On the other hand, it only manged a B plus from CinemaScore, which is weak for a family film.

The Equalizer 2 fell almost exactly 70% from its opening Friday to earn $4.01 million yesterday. It is on pace for between $13 million and $14 million, meaning its chances of getting to $100 million took a serious hit. It could still get there, if it manages to stick around in theaters and Sony decides to give it a boost over the top.
