Home Market Releases for April 10th, 2018

April 10, 2018

Phantom Thread

The last box office hit of 2017, The Greatest Showman, hits the home market this week. There are also a couple of Awards Season contenders, but for the most part, it is another slow week. Phantom Thread on Blu-ray is the clear Pick of the Week winner. Meanwhile, Molly’s Game on Blu-ray Combo Pack is the only real competition.

All the Money in the World - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film was made to win Oscars, but while its reviews were very good, they were not good enough to become an Awards Season contender. In fact, the film is best know for Christopher Plummer replacing an actor at the last minute, because the original actor was involved in the #MeToo movement, and not as an activist. Extras include a trio of featurettes and some deleted scenes. It is worth picking up, but it is not a Pick of the Week contender.

Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds - Reviews Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This South Korean film earned over $100 million in its native market. To put this into perspective, the South Korean market is about one eighth the size of the domestic market. The film also managed nearly $2 million here, which is a great run for a foreign-language limited release. On the other hand, the reviews are mixed and there are not a lot of extras on the DVD / Blu-ray. It is still worth checking out, especially if you are a fan of fantasy martial arts movies.

Braven - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This DVD / Blu-ray is selling rather well, for a film that debuted on VOD and went nowhere at the box office. On the other hand, there’s not a lot of competition to deal with. The reviews are good, but not great, while there is only a single featurette as far as extras are concerned. Call it a rental.

Deep Red: Limited Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
One of Dario Argento best films, and that’s saying a lot. There are plenty of extras on the 2-disc limited edition release, including some physical extras. On the other hand, it does cost a lot. It is worth picking up if you are a fan of the director, but the price precludes it from being a Pick of the Week contender.

The Greatest Showman - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film opened with only only $9 million / $13 million during its opening weekend. It should have disappeared from theaters rather quickly after that. However, it found an audience that went to the film over and over again and it lasted in theaters long enough to top $170 million domestically. On the other hand, the reviews were mixed and if you are not a fan of musicals, then this one is not going to convince you otherwise. Extras include a feature-length behind-the-scenes / making of documentary, as well as a sing-along feature. If you are a fan of musicals, it is worth picking up, but it is not a Pick of the Week contender.

Hailey Dean Mystery: Murder With Love - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
Long-term readers can probably guess what I’m about to say here. ... This is a Hallmark Channel original movie. It has no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but if you are part of the target audience, you probably already know if you are interested in watching it.

Molly’s Game - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film earned some Awards Season buzz and even picked up an Oscar Nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. Did it deserve more success? Or was it lucky to get that far? Read our review to find out.

Outlander: Season 3 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo or Blu-ray Collector’s Edition
This show is doing so well in the ratings for Starz that is was renewed for season three and season four before season two was even finished airing. The third season earned its best ratings yet, while it maintained its strong showing earning countless nominations and wins. Extras on the regular edition includes two featurettes, deleted scenes, and outtakes. The Collector’s Edition has additional extras, as well as a booklet.

Phantom Thread - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray

This is supposedly Daniel Day-Lewis’s final film. I don’t buy it. I’ve seen too many actors, directors, etc. say they’ve retired and come back. If this is his last performance, it’s a hell of a performance. Extras on the DVD / Blu-ray include camera tests, deleted scenes, and more. It’s the best of the Awards Season contenders on this week’s list and a Pick of the Week contender.

Proud Mary - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film was a disappointment, both with critics and at the box office. It does have a trio of featurettes, which is better than expected. Even so, it is only worth a rental and that’s only if you are a fan of the lead actress and the genre.

The Sandlot: 25th Anniversary Edition - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The screener arrived a day late, but I was able to get to the review this week. This is a film that thrives on nostalgia, but have the years been kind to it? Or have audiences moved on? Read our review for my opinion.

Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
The animated Suicide Squad films are so much better than the live-action film. Extras include audio commentary track, featurettes, preview for the next film in the series, and more. It is worth picking up for fans of D.C. Comics’ animated films.

Up in Smoke: 40th Anniversary Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A 40-year old Stoner Comedy film. It was considered a classic among its target audience when it first came out, but I’m not sure how well it has aged in the decades that followed. There are plenty of extras on the DVD / Blu-ray, including a new retrospective.

I never liked Danny McBride as a lead, but he’s good in supporting roles. He can’t carry a show like this.
