Weekend Estimates: Jackass Brings Gravity to Earth

As anticipated, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa will end Gravity's run at the top of the chart this weekend, with the hidden camera comedy set to earn about $32 million according to Paramount Pictures, somewhat less than Jackass 3D, but very much in line with the other films in the Jackass franchise. The 32% decline for Gravity, meanwhile, is its steepest fall so far, but topping $20 million in its fourth weekend is an impressive performance (only 24 other films have done it), and it will end the weekend within a whisker of $200 million.
Things looks decidedly less rosy for The Counselor, which will open with around $8 million and a theater average of $2,600 or so. Poor reviews and audience reactions are definitely dragging that one down.
Some limited releases are doing very nicely this weekend though. 12 Years a Slave will hit $2.15 million from 123 theaters for an impressive average of roughly $17,500, and is clearly going to expand considerably. Blue is the Warmest Color will most likely top the theater chart this weekend with an average of $25,000 in four venues in the US. It also has Canadian numbers to factor in, which we should receive on Monday.
Two other limited releases have reported averages over $10,000 so far: Capital from Cohen Media Group with $22,400 in two venues, and The Square with $15,665 projected for an opening weekend for first-time distributor Noujaim Films.
