DVD Releases for October 14, 2008 - Part II

The DVD Release Report finally comes out this week after a couple of delays. At least it is worth the wait as one of the most anticipated films of the year, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, comes out on both Two-Disc Collector's Edition and Blu-ray. DVD Releases for September 23, 2008 - Part I

Aaaahhhhhh! POP! ... That sound you just heard was my head exploding. This week we had a new record for spotlight reviews, and with TV on DVD kicking into high gear and summer blockbusters starting to come out soon, I don't think it will slow down. (Additionally, I have close to a dozen DVDs that arrived late, and I was only able to get to less than half of them for this week. So look for another huge batch next week.) As for the quality releases, there were a few that caught my eye, but none more than The Godfather Trilogy on Blu-ray. Sure, it doesn't push the high definition format, but this is the best these films have looked in decades and any film buff will want to have them in their collection. Meanwhile, last week's release of Duckman - Season One and Two also deserves to be awarded the DVD Pick of the Week. DVD Sales - Pirates Find Plenty of Booty on the Home Market

Only five new releases landed on the sales chart this week, but that included the top two sellers. Leading the way was Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End with a year's best weekly sales of 7.35 million units and total revenue of $145.06 million, which crushes The Transformers' opening week by nearly 2 million units. DVD Sales - Shrek Stomps Competition

Shrek the Third was the second digitally animated film to debut on top of the sales chart in two weeks. Preliminary numbers have the DVD selling 4.10 million units for $62.42 million in sales. Another big list of DVD releases, including nearly a dozen spotlight reviews. And again, we had to split the list into two parts. There is also a number of high quality releases this week making the selection for DVD Pick of the Week tough to make. Hairspray managed to climb into sixth place by the narrowest of margins earning $4.59 million on 2073 screens in 37 markets for a running tally of $54.35 million. This includes a third place, $1.36 million opening on 302 screens in Italy, which is close to its opening domestically, when you take into account the relative size of the two markets. On the other hand, many muscials prove to be difficult to market internationally and it was never likely that this film would match its domestic run. International Details - Ratatouille Serves Up an International Dish

Ratatouille opening in first place in South Africa this weekend earning $298,000 on 40 screens, which is very close to what The Simpsons Movie made in its opening there a few weeks ago. Its best market of the weekend remains France where it was down a mere 4% to $1.67 million on 655 screens over the weekend for a total of $58.63 million. At this pace, the film will reach $60 million by this time next week while topping Finding Nemo's total of nearly $65 million is increasingly in reach. Overall Ratatouille added $4.66 million on 2535 screens in 27 markets for a total of $216.42 million, which is more than Cars managed, and this film still has openings in Germany, U.K., Italy, and Scandinavia. International Top Five - Bourne's the Best, Again

The Bourne Ultimatum was able to capture top spot, again, while crossing $100 million internationally. Over the weekend the film added $20.84 million on 4124 screens in 45 markets for a total of $125.06 million, which puts it ahead of The Bourne Supremacy on that chart making it the undisputed champion of the franchise. The film finally ended Ratatouille's dominance of France with a reported $4.4 million on 462 screens while it top neighboring Belgium with $861,000 on 58 screens, including previews. The film also opened in first place in South Korea topping a list of five new releases in the top ten; it managed this with $2.89 million on 403 screens over the weekend and $3.47 million in total. In addition, the film is still in first place in Germany with $2.50 million on 702 screens for a two-week total of $8.47 million. More...

International Top Five - Ultimatum Ultimate Bourne Film

The Bourne Ultimatum regained top spot as it became the fist film from the Bourne franchise to cross $300 million worldwide while it is about a week from being the highest grossing film internationally as well. Over the weekend the film added $15.79 million on 3341 screens in 38 markets for a total of $98.24 million internationally and $308.53 million worldwide. It was aided by two openings in major markets as it scored first place in both Germany, ($4.65 million on 703 screens), and Mexico, ($1.43 million on 385 screens). Meanwhile, the film is still doing swift business in holdovers like Australia with $3.25 million on 402 screens over the weekend and $10.08 million in total and the U.K. with $2.21 million on 457 screens over the weekend and $40.63 million in total. The Bourne Ultimatum opens in France and South Korea this week while it doesn't hit Italy and Japan till November and by then it could have $200 million internationally. More...

It was the end of summer and that's the best time for Shrek the Third to make its debut in Italy. Summers in Italy are for outdoor activities, so much so that many theaters close down for the season, which makes it a good plan to hold off opening blockbusters there till the fall. The film dominated that market earning $8.02 million on 705 screens over the weekend and $10.67 million overall. The film also opened in three of the four Scandinavian markets earning a combined $4.06 million on 347 screens, including previews / midweek numbers. The Transformers fell out of the top five but still cracked 8 digits with $11.10 million on 54.92 screens in 52 markets for a total of $354.33 million. The film is mostly coasting on holdovers at the moment, but it did top the Polish market with $664,000 on 106 screens while its best market was Japan where it added $2.49 million on 592 screens over the weekend for a total of $23.98 million. International Details - Transformers Remains Hair-raising

The Transformers held on strong dipping just 7% to $33.77 million on 4626 screens in 41 markets for a total of $192.44 million. This includes an estimated $6.4 million from previews in the U.K. The film's only major opening of the weekend was Mexico where it placed first with $5.46 million on 410 screens pushing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix into second place. International Details - Harry Was Not the Only Film to Light Up the Charts

As expected, The Transformers fell to second place this week, what wasn't expected was how well it held on. The film was down a mere 23% to $36.13 million on 3667 screens in 31 markets for a total of $146.66 million internationally. The film opened in China with a record-setting $12.6 million on 300 screens over the first five days while it earned $498,000 on 71 in Greece and $258,000 from 28 in Israel. The film's best market so far has been South Korea where it has taken in $39.52 million in three weeks, including $5.76 million on 540 screens this past weekend. This is a record for a non-South Korean film and an unexpectedly strong performance. Additionally, the film has yet to open in a number of major markets including the U.K., Japan, France, and Mexico and should hit $300 million internationally and $600 million worldwide, if not more. The Transformers climbed into top spot with $47.17 million on 3381 screens in 29 markets for a total of $97.21 million. The film opened in nearly 20 markets, and did extremely well in a number of them, but it was a holdover that led the way. In South Korea the film grew by 5% to $11.83 million on 617 screens for a two-week total of $31.02 million, which is nearly what Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End will earn there in total. Its biggest opening came in Russia where it made $6.81 million on 700 screens over the weekend and $7.19 million in total while in Spain it took in $3.57 million on 565 screens over the weekend and $4.87 million in total. For the third weekend in a row, Shrek the Third led the international box office this time growing substantially to $60.98 million on 5810 screens in 41 markets for a total of $262.00 million. Almost all of the growth came from Britain where it scored a record-opening of $33.45 million on 535 screens, sort of. This includes more than $10 million in previews that was earned over three days and that, plus a weakened American dollar, helped it over the top. On the other hand, the film struggled in Japan placing third with $2.97 million on 543 screens; that was less than Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End earned in its sixth week there. Shrek the Third managed to grow, albeit by a tiny amount, adding $47.29 million on 5,737 screens in 45 markets for a total of $170.44 million. The film opened in a pair of major markets scoring first place in Germany with $7.84 million on 861 screens and a nearly identical $7.77 million on 687 screens in Spain. While these numbers are impressive, they are not up to the same level as Shrek 2 managed. On the other hand, it had the best openig of the year and the franchise in Belgium with $2.47 million on 125 screens, including midweek numbers. Evan Makes Executives Uptighty

The box office was off last year's pace, again, this time it is mainly due to the box office struggles of the overall box office leader, Evan Almighty, which missed lowered expectations. Overall the industry added $132 million over the weekend, which was down 9% from last weekend and 6% from the same weekend last year. It is not time to panic, yet, but if we don't see the box office rebound over the next few weeks, industry talk will switch from the big hits to the misses, and that tends to worsen a depressed market even more. Not only did Shrek the Third climb to top spot this weekend, it also crossed $100 million internationally while hitting $400 million worldwide. Over the weekend the film added more than 10 new markets earning $46.64 million on 3564 screens in 32 markets for a total of $108.27 million, double its haul at this point last week. Its biggest new market of the week was France where it earned $12.5 million from 850 screens, 20% more than Shrek 2 opened with. The film was also tops in Mexico with $9.12 million on 418 screens and in Brazil with $5.9 million on 280. That last figure represents a record for animated films and is nearly triple what Shrek 2 opened with. On the other hand, the film fell nearly 50% in Australia to $4.41 million on 476 screens for a total of $16.78 million while its decline was even steeper in South Korea down 69% to $2.7 million over the weekend and $15.2 million in total. That said, it is still tracking for a $500 million international total and $800 million worldwide. On the other hand, poor critical reception and shorter legs suggest the franchise peaked with Shrek 2 and Shrek 4 and Shrek 5 might be pressing the studio's luck. More...

Weaker than expected competition helped Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End maintain its stranglehold on first place, despite losing more than 50% at the box office. Over the weekend the film added $50.70 million on 12,591 screens in 103 markets for a total of $495.16 million meaning it should crack $500 million internationally by this time this column in published while $600 million is still the target number. However, due to weaker than expected domestic numbers $1 billion worldwide is out of reach. The film hit $50 million in Japan over the weekend after earning $7.68 million on 842 screens, down just 20%. That was the film's biggest single market over the weekend, but its total there of $50.41 million is second place to the U.K.'s $66.22 million running tally. Ocean's Luck Runs Out

After three monster hits, it appears moviegoers might be undergoing some type of blockbuster fatigue. All three new releases wilted under the pressure at the weekend. Overall, the box office still increased from last week, but it was up less than 1% to $136 million and compared to the same weekend last year it was down 11%. Worse yet, 2007 has fallen below 2004's record setting pace for the summer season and that year wasn't as front-loaded as this year. International Top Five - Pirates Catching Up

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End lost more than 50% of its international opening this past weekend, but it was still the clear winner with an outstanding $103.22 million on 17,500 screens in 103 markets. It also became the fastest film to reach $400 million internationally with $406.41 million after the weekend and that places it 25th on that particular chart. Worldwide the film had $623.96 million, which put it in 30th place just behind The Incredibles (it overtook that film during the week). Pirates Hit Hard but not Knocked Out

The post-holiday weekend saw a massive collapse at the box office, with receipts down 34% to $135 million. However, that collapse was entirely predictable. Spider-Man 3 earned a comfortable second place earning almost as much as the rest of the films on this list with $21.07 million on 10,365 screens in 76 markets for a total of $501.00 million. It is only the 14th film to reach that milestone while it became the 16th film to top $800 million worldwide and has already climbed into 14th place overall. The U.K. regained the lead as the best market for the film adding $2.58 million on 460 screens for a total of $61.09 million. Japan took in $2.36 million on 630 screens while France made $2.31 million on 866 screens as the only other two markets to top $2 million over the weekend and the film now has $47.79 million and $48.55 million respectively. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, and its record-breaking theater count of 4,362 were able to top the per theater chart this weekend with $26,303. As impressive as that was, both Shrek the Third and Spider-Man 3 opened with better averages. Paprika opened in second place with $17,797, but while that's a great start, its niche market appeal will prevent it from expanding wide. Last week's winner, Once, fell to third with $16,607, but, given the film's expansion, this was an amazing hold. Shrek Sets Records for Animated Movie

There was another massive opening over the weekend, something we'll have to get used to this summer, but not all reports are glowing. The second $100 million opening of the month helped push the overall box office up, way up, to $182 million, which is 70% higher than last weekend. However impressive these weekly fluctuations may seem, it is the year-to-year increase of 11% that is more important. The other number of note is 15%, which is how much higher this summer is over the record-setting pace of 2004. That summer not only gave us Shrek 2, but also Spider-Man 2 and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Weekend Estimates: Shrek Opens with $122 Million

May is continuing on its winning way, with another gargantuan opening this weekend. Shrek the Third earned an estimated $122 million, the 3rd-biggest weekend in history and a new record for an animated movie (beating Shrek 2's $108 million opening in 2004).

After posting a healthy $38.5 million on Friday, Shrek gathered steam through the weekend. Saturday's total of $47 million is the 5th-biggest day in movie history (see complete list), and the second-biggest Saturday behind Spider-Man 3. Shrek Opens with $39 Million Day

Update: Paramount have confirmed the $39 million opening day figure, with $900,000 earned in Thursday night previews.

Shrek the Third showed that moviegoers have enough appetite for more than one blockbuster opening in a month on Friday, as the movie opened with a huge $39 million day, according to The Numbers' estimates (see full daily chart). As expected, that's behind the pace of Spider-Man 3, which opened with a $59.8 million Friday, but Shrek, being a more kid-friendly movie, should pack theaters throughout Saturday and Sunday, and that will take it to similar box office heights.

Assuming a $45 million Saturday take and $35 million on Sunday, the ogre movie would end the weekend with around $120 million, which would be the third-biggest weekend in movie history. More...

2007 Preview: May

It's the first of May, which means it is the start of the summer blockbuster season. This year, May is dominated by sequels, and not just sequels; there are three monster franchises releasing their third installments this month. If these films were the only monster hits being released this month, I would assume that any of them would have little difficulty hitting $300 million; for that matter, all three would have a better than 50% shot at $400 million. However, it seems highly unlikely to have three $400 million movies open in one month, especially given there's never been two $400 million movies to open in the same year. But who knows, records have already fallen this year, so anything's possible. On a side note, there is a real gap between the big three and the rest of the new releases. There's a slim chance another sequel, 28 Weeks Later, could crack $100 million. However, it looks like the any of the big three releases will earn twice as much as all of the other films on this list will earn combined. More...
