The Transformers was able to remain in top spot on the sales chart but it is hard to call this a victory as it fell more than 70% to 1.64 million units sold. However, This was a better hold than 300 managed during its second week of release and the film has an edge in sales after two weeks in both total units sold, (7.14 million vs. 6.60 million), and dollars, ($164.15 million vs. $149.64 million), including last week's adjusted numbers. This gives The Transformers a clear path to becoming the top selling DVD of the year, at least so far.

Wow. What a week for DVD releases. There are roughly 50 releases on this week's list but strangely not many that were in contention for the DVD Pick of the Week. In a few cases the price-tag was just too high, or the extras were a little light. In the end I went with Fido - Buy from Amazon. Some might think this is my pro-Canada bias showing through... and I really can't argue with that. Still, it is a fun movie and deserves to be seen by more people.

Brand Upon the Brain! was the top dog on the per theater chart this week, scoring an impressive $46,412 in its one theater over the weekend and $63,837 since Wednesday.
In most cases this would be clear evidence that the film was destined for mainstream success. However, given the nature of the movie, it should have a successful tour of art house theaters in major cities, but it will never play in multiplexes.
The second place film was Brooklyn Rules with $41,811 an exclusive engagement ahead of this Friday's opening.
Paris, je t'aime remained in third place while its average rose to $20,247.
The overall number one film, Spider-man 3, earned an average of $13,680, which was more than the four new wide releases combined.
Finally, Waitress just maintained a $10,000 average, earning an average of $10,108 in 65 theaters.
There is little doubt the film will earn some measure of mainstream success at this point.

Not the best week for sites as there was only one that had even a chance of winning, Surf's Up - Official Site. There were a couple others that showed potential, but they will need a little more work to win.

There's another massive list of limited releases this week, including several that are in more than a couple of dozen theaters.
However, this could be a serious problem as the market can only handle two movies opening that wide and maybe a few smaller releases.
With this many films trying to squeeze into a tight weekend, at least half will fail to meet expectations.

It's the first of May, which means it is the start of the summer blockbuster season.
This year, May is dominated by sequels, and not just sequels; there are three monster franchises releasing their third installments this month.
If these films were the only monster hits being released this month, I would assume that any of them would have little difficulty hitting $300 million; for that matter, all three would have a better than 50% shot at $400 million.
However, it seems highly unlikely to have three $400 million movies open in one month, especially given there's never been two $400 million movies to open in the same year.
But who knows, records have already fallen this year, so anything's possible.
On a side note, there is a real gap between the big three and the rest of the new releases.
There's a slim chance another sequel, 28 Weeks Later, could crack $100 million.
However, it looks like the any of the big three releases will earn twice as much as all of the other films on this list will earn combined.

It is the beginning of a new year. A time to start fresh. So why do most of the new releases smell so stale? It's the January dumping ground, home to films that looked promising on paper but just didn't pan out.
That doesn't mean there are no films that could be worth checking out.
Out of the twelve new films opening wide this month (that's opening, not expanding), Smokin' Aces looks great and so does ... no, that's about it.
Almost all of the new releases are likely to struggle at the box office and with critics alike.
And to make matters worse, six of these new releases are going wide on the same weekend.
This is complete madness and guarantees that at least two films that would otherwise succeed are going to fail.
On the other hand, there are nearly a dozen films that have previously opened and are expanding wide (Children of Men and Pan's Labyrinth, for example), or are being re-released to grab some last minute Oscar buzz,
(The Queen and The Last King of Scotland, among others).
This makes for an incredibly busy month, but not one that will likely produce many hits.
Two additional notes...
Firstly, Letters from Iwo Jima is expanding throughout the month but likely won't go wide until February.
Secondly, The Dead Girl has a planned expansion on the 19th, but after struggling in limited release since opening last weekend, this seems unlikely.
