Nurse Betty Needs an Ambulance
by Nonia Bidness

Pros: A little good humor, Rock & Freeman.
Cons: Muddy direction, no points.

When I have trouble deciding whether I really recommend a film, I feel a little freer to give away plot details, or at least to explore how I feel about them a little more. I think I am leaning towards recommending Nurse Betty more than I am leaning away from that, though I still have an occasional doubt. Two out of five stars is the best I can give it.

Betty is a Ms. Milquetoast person when we meet her; they really don't develop her "Pre-Trauma" character that well. I really wasn't crazy about the Betty character and sometimes it bothered me the way her lips were always pursed (I can be the Queen of Petty Judgement).

I really liked Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock together, and each one individually. Chris had some of the best lines in the movie - but also had some of the parts that I found a little disturbing and a bit too far over the edge for a "light comedy". If you are going to be a film noir, fine! If you are going to be a comedy, fine! Just don't think that the two can be mixed up without confusing the viewer!

The soap opera "Reason to Love" is what reminds me of Tootsie, and I mean no offense to Dustin Hoffman. Tootsie is head and shoulders above Nurse Betty in quality. Tootsie actually made some good points. I am not really sure there was much of any kind of statement made in Nurse Betty other than "Remember - soap operas are only pretend".

I don't want to be too harsh here, because we did laugh and we were entertained and there were parts that were kind of fresh and wacky. There was a little violence that was harsh and some language that was strong for an innocuous farce.

So here's my best advice: Flip a coin. Heads = Go to the matinee (or rent when video comes out). Tails = skip Nurse Betty, go see what you favorite film critic recommends instead.

Bang for the Buck: Wait for it on video.
Movie Mood: Funny Movie.
