International Details - Glorious Beginning

October 8, 2006

Indigenes, a.k.a. Days of Glory, opened in first place in its native France with $5.53 million on 460 screens while it managed ninth in Switzerland with $76,000 despite opening on only 8 screens. The film opened on Wednesday in Belgium before expanding to other European market in the coming weeks.

  • Bo bui gai wak, a.k.a. Rob-B-Hood, opened in half a dozen markets over the weekend earning $5.12 million over the weekend and on 1040 screens. The film opened in first place in Hong Kong with $1.37 million on 53 screen but it failed to make an impact in South Korea as it placed seventh with just $376,000 on 174 screens over the weekend and $451,000 overall.
  • Oh no! Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest fell from second to eighth as it plummeted 44%! It's officially a bomb. In all seriousness, the film added $4.11 million on 2400 screens in 33 markets for a total of $631.62 million and it will climb a bit higher, but not enough to hit any more major milestones.
  • Hoodwinked! climbed into the top ten with a reported $3.67 million on 1007 screens in 5 markets for a total of $40.10 million. Nearly all of this came from the film's second place, $3.30 million opening on 435 screens in the U.K. while it slipped a spot to forth in Spain with $736,000 on 258 screens over the weekend and $2.12 million in total. These two markets do add up to more than the weekend total, but it probably has something to do with previews.
  • Cars fell to 10th place with $3.66 million on 2420 screens in 21 markets and now has $203.78 million internationally. Its best market continues to be Germany where it is showing very strong legs after a much weaker than expected start. This week it was down just 16% to $1.24 million on 805 screens and as now earned $10.03 million in total.
  • Nada SoSo, which means None Average, opened in first place in Japan with $3.34 million on 329 screens, which was enough 11th on the overall charts.
  • Little Man didn't have any major openings and that left it falling down the charts with $2.96 million on 1492 screens in 30 markets for a total of $33.90 million. It biggest opening was Venezuela where it claimed top spot with $105,000 on 40 screens.
  • You, Me & Dupree also fell several spot due to its lack of major openings. Over the weekend it added $2.54 million on 1305 screens in 29 markets to its total of $39.67 million.
  • Ye Yan, a.k.a., The Banquet lost more than half its weekend total down to $2.45 million on 494 screens in 6 markets for a running tally of just under $20.00 million. We're still looking for a solid release date here, but given the film's performance so far, that seems inevitable.
  • The Black Dahlia made its first appearance on the charts with $2.20 million on 797 screens in 6 markets and now has $4.61 million in total. This weekend it opened in two major markets, Italy and Russia, placing third in each. In the former it made $1.08 million on 318 screens while in the latter it made $739,000 on 210, including midweek numbers.
  • Marrying the Mafia 3 had the worst week-to-week drop off on the charts as it fell 63% plummeting from 3rd to 16th. The film is still playing in the one market, South Korea, where it slipped to second place with $2.16 million on 420 screens over the weekend and $11.21 million in total.
  • Step Up managed to reach 17th place with $2.07 million on 418 screens in 12 markets for an early international total of $6.51 million. Almost all of its weekend total came from two second openings, Australia where it took in $1.29 million on 154 screens and New Zealand with $207,000 on 39 screens.
  • Miami Vice added $1.88 million on 1790 screens in 42 markets to its total of $88.19 million. The film has a handful of markets left to open in and depending on how well it does in Italy and China, for example, it could reach $100 million, but it will be a challenge.
  • Monster House is still a significant way away from matching its domestic total internationally, but with $1.84 million on 1935 screens in 43 markets this weekend, it is getting closer. The film is yet to open in Italy and Japan and in the end its $54.87 million running tally could rise enough.
  • The Break-Up is shedding screens and markets now as it fell 10 places to 20th with $1.82 million on 740 screens in 23 markets for a total of $81.31 million. This decline was mirrored in its biggest market, Italy, where it was down 34% to $1.12 million on 290 screens for a total of $3.54 million after two weeks of release.
  • Children Of Men fell from first to fourth in the U.K., but this was due to extreme competition and not any weakness in the film's drawing power. The film fell just 25% to $1.79 million on 372 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $5.56 million.
  • Lady in the Water climbed to 22nd place with $1.79 million on 1017 screens in 20 markets for a very disappointing total of $24.68 million. The film had two major openings earning fourth place with $806,000 on 267 screens in Japan and just sixth place with $473,000 on 174 screens in Italy. The film has no major markets left to open in, and I would be somewhat surprised if it remained on the chart next weekend.
  • Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby fell more than ten places to 23rd to $1.76 million on 952 screens in 15 markets for a total of just $9.87 million. The film had a handful of openings, the largest of which was Mexico but it only managed 10th place with $125,000 on 200 screens. On the other hand, it finished first in Iceland with more than 3 million kroner... which is about $43,000 American.
  • Over The Hedge expanded into its final Scandinavian market taking first place in Denmark with $456,000 on 95 screens over the weekend and $498,000 in total. The film climbed into first place in Finland with $126,000 on 53 screens over the weekend and $302,000 in total while it remained in first in Sweden with $426,000 on 172 screens and $1.04 million in total. Overall the film grew by 7% to $1.72 million on 673 screens in 19 markets for a total of $164.48 million with Greece and Italy left to go.
  • The Queen is still playing in just the two markets, the U.K. and Italy, and its performances there continue to diverge. It the U.K. it was down a mere 12% to $1.50 million on 345 screens for a total of $8.06 million. Meanwhile in Italy is plummeted 49% to $196,000 on 105 screens for a total of $1.86 million. The film's next big test is France and other French-speaking markets, where it will open in the middle of the month.
  • Les Aristos, a.k.a. The Aristos, slipped a spot to third in France with $1.54 million on 396 screens for a two-week total of $4.40. In addition, the film opened in eighth place in Belgium with $79,000 on 12 screens over the weekend and $83,000 in total.
  • My Super Ex-Girlfriend added $1.56 million on 998 screens in 20 markets to its total of $28.01 million. The only opening of note this week was in Hong Kong where the film managed third place with $136,000 on 29 screens, well below the $10,000 per screen average that signifies a hit in the market.
  • The Ant Bully climbed back into the charts, barely, with $1.54 million on 1259 screens in 33 markets for an anemic international total of $19.41 million. The film finally opened nationwide in Australia but only made $250,000 on 211 screens over the weekend, and even its total of $707,000 is not impressive. The film was even weaker in Holland opening in ninth place with $52,000 on 58 screens over the weekend and $63,000 in total.
  • The Lake House show reasonable legs in Japan down 26% to $1.14 million on 271 screens over the weekend and $4.46 million in total. Overall its week-to-week drop-off was nearly identical as it added $1.47 million on 562 screens in 29 markets for a total of $55.33 million. The film has no major openings and will end with a worldwide box office that is respectable, but not as high as initial expectations.
  • Little Miss Sunshine added $1.42 million on 369 screens in 7 markets to its early international total of $8.25 million. Its biggest market of the weekend was France where it added $603,000 on 95 screens to its total of $3.20 million. Meanwhile, the biggest market it its run was the U.K. where it as made $4.10 million including $531,000 on 171 screens this past weekend.
  • Alatriste was finally knocked out of top spot in Spain but it is still performing well earning $893,000 on 397 screens over the weekend and $19.38 million in total.
  • Garfield's A Tail of Two Kitties fell out of the top 30 but still added $800,000 on 300 screens for a total of $104 million. This includes New Zealand where it climbed into first place during its third weekend of release with $222,000 on 80 screens over the weekend and $724,000 in total.
