International Details - Banquet Satisfies Millions More

October 1, 2006

Ye Yan, a.k.a., The Banquet opened in third place in South Korea with $1.04 million on 183 screens over the weekend and $1.24 million in total. That helped the Chinese film place sixth overall with $5.52 million on 734 screens in 6 markets lifting its international total to $15.94 million, which is just above its production budget.

  • Little Man opened in a handful of smaller markets but it relied on holdovers to earn its weekend haul of $4.91 million on 1636 screens in 31 markets. Its best market was Spain where it remained in second place with $1.43 million on 250 screens over the weekend and $3.94 million in total while it was down just 25% in Mexico to $766,000 on 352 screens over the weekend and $2.45 million in total. Overall the film has pulled in $29.48 million but there are few major markets left to open in.
  • You, Me & Dupree climbed a spot to eighth with $3.80 million on 1551 screens in 27 markets for a total of $35.73 million. The film debuted in third place in Germany with $1.19 million on 348 screens while it managed second place in Poland with $138,000 on 45.
  • The Devil Wears Prada shot into the top ten with $3.78 million on 796 screens in 12 markets for an early international total of $6.79 million. The film opened in first place in Mexico with $1.31 million on 430 screens over the weekend and $1.53 million in total while it had to settle for second place in Australia with $1.00 million on 193 screens. However, perhaps most impressive was its holdover in Hong Kong where it climbed from third to first with $484,000 on 24 screens over the weekend and $1.00 million in total.
  • The Break-Up may have opened in only one market this weekend, but it was enough to help it climb into 10th place with $2.99 million on 1017 screens in 32 markets for a total of $78.38 million. In its lone opening, Italy, it scored second place with $1.73 million on 297 screens earning the best per screen average in the market. From now on it is coasting on holdovers, but it is already had a successful international run so there's little reason to complain.
  • Maundy Thursday fell from 5th to 11th on the international charts has it slipped to second place in South Korea. In its native market the film made $2.85 million over the weekend and for a two-week total of $13.12 million.
  • Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby had a pair of first place openings this weekend, which helped it climb into 12th place with $2.81 million on 833 screens in 12 markets for a total of $6.81 million. In Australia it managed $1.29 million on 289 screens while in New Zealand it took in $140,000 on 53 screens. Its other market of note was the U.K. as the film fell from first to third with $1.29 million on 404 screens for a two-week total of $4.17 million.
  • My Super Ex-Girlfriend opened in several markets over the weekend and that helped it remain flat $2.64 million on 1274 screens in 29 markets but its total of $25.68 million is still disappointing. Its biggest market was Spain at $932,000 on 298 screens, but that was only enough for fifth place there. On the other hand, the film earned second place in Belgium with $227,000 on 40 screens over the weekend and $249,000 in total.
  • Click opened in a handful of smaller markets and that helped it remain in 14th place with $2.62 million on 1240 screens in 43 markets for an international total of $47.40 million. This weekend is a very busy one for the film with openings in four major markets and that could propel it into the top five.
  • Miami Vice tumbled this weekend down to 15th place with $2.60 million on 2233 screens in 43 markets for a total of $85.25 million.
  • Monster House fell from 8th to 16th with $2.52 million on 2326 screens in 51 markets while its international total is a still disappointing $51.93 million.
  • Children Of Men started its international, and indeed worldwide run with a first place, $2.43 million debut on 368 screens in the U.K. This was enough to place the film 17th on the overall charts and bodes well for its December release here.
  • Les Aristos, a.k.a. The Aristos, opened in second place in its native France with $2.39 million on 388 screens.
  • Hoodwinked! returned to the charts with $2.29 million on 1010 screens in 6 markets lifting its international total to $35.98 million. Half of the weekend take came from the film's third place, $1.14 million opening on 256 screens in Spain.
  • The Queen collapse in Italy down 52% to $393,000 on 188 screens over the weekend and $1.51 million in total. On the other hand, it grew by 6% in the U.K. to $1.73 million on 349 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $5.06 million. There's little surprise that the film is doing better in the U.K. that Italy, but the size of the drop-off in that latter market is a little distressing, especially given its affinity for Oscar caliber films.
  • Lake House returned to the charts thanks to its first place, $1.56 million opening on 270 screens in Japan. That was the majority of the film's $1.97 million weekend box office, a box office that was earned on 688 screens in 31 markets. It was also enough to push the film's international total above its domestic one, $52.37 million to $52.32 million.
  • Garfield's A Tail of Two Kitties finally opened nationwide in Australia and that helped the film's weekend haul grow by 24% to $1.85 million on 1399 screens in 9 markets. In Australia the film finished fourth with $625,000 on 201 screens over the weekend and $1.24 million in total. • Over The Hedge returned to the charts in 24th place with $1.61 million on 812 screens in 22 markets over the weekend for a total of $162.42 million internationally. It did this by opening in three of the four Scandinavian markets earning $755,000 on 91 screens in Norway, $439,000 on 172 in Sweden, ($524,000 including previews), and $122,000 on 53 in Finland, ($140,000 including previews). The film opens in Denmark this weekend and Italy at the end of October.
  • Little Miss Sunshine opened in semi-limited release in Italy taking in $165,000 on 68 screens over the weekend, which is a little lower than expected. Overall the film managed $1.60 million on 349 screens in 5 markets for a $6.08 million running tally and considering the legs the film is showing, this total will undoubtedly grow a lot over the coming weeks and months.
  • Alatriste remained in top spot in Spain with $1.55 million on 443 screens for a total of $18.23 million.
  • X-Men: The Last Stand added another $1.29 million on 681 screens in 2 markets to its international total of $219.44 million. This is the last week the film will appear in the top 30, but the studio may still give weekly updates for a while.

That was the vast majority of the film's weekend haul of $1.17 million on 485 screens in 19 markets, which lifted its international total to $91.57 million.
  • United 93 continues to coast on holdovers adding $900,000 on 695 screens in 40 markets to its $40.44 million international total.
  • Lady in the Water fell off the charts this weekend taking in just $886,000 for a total of $23 million. The film opens in Japan and Italy this weekend and that should be enough for it to return to the charts.
  • Barnyard opened in fifth place in Australia with $456,000 on 206 screens over the weekend and $649,000 including previews. The film also opened in New Zealand but flopped with just a tenth place, $39,000 opening on 50 screens. • An Inconvenient Truth continues its slow roll out taking in $660,000 on 196 screens in 11 markets for a very early international total of $2.14 million. In both Australia and New Zealand the film was down less than 10%, which bodes very well for the film's long term chances.
  • Superman Returns may have fallen off the charts, but the studio is still updating its international box office. The latest figure has it at $189.5 million, including $602,000 this past weekend.
