Where the Money Is Pays Off Review by Nonia Bidness
This was my third choice of the 4 movies on my list of “want to see” this week-end, but my husband does get first choice on occasion.
It was the cast that caught our attention; I think we both avoided seeing previews of this film as we’ve been stung so badly lately by previews that save no surprises for the movie itself to deliver.
I honestly can’t think of a Paul Newman movie that wasn’t good or better than good, back to Cool Hand Luke days.
What can I say, he just seems to get better.
He is just the right choice for this genre, the film noir that is subtle and fresh.
Linda Fiorentino does a fine job as the female lead, convincingly plays a cool, cunning and danger-loving woman who’s become somewhat bored with her simple life.
Dermot Mulroney is one of the young male actors I wish we’d get to see more of, and though his character wasn’t as likable as some roles I’ve seen him in, he performed it pleasingly enough.
The elderly folks in the home were great and sweet and the other supporting cast was well chosen.
This movie had some fast paced moments and some others that were slow and thoughtful, and had interesting, clever and unusual plot lines.
Entwined in its story were messages about courage and risk-taking and spontaneity, even though its overall theme was hardly a moral one.
Enough action and suspense to keep the audience’s attention but still developing the characters and taking time to show relationships, definitely worth the 2 hour, $7 investment.
Movie mood: Serious/Action/Noir
Rating: 3 stars
Bang for the Buck: go to a bargain matinee unless you’re on a date (always in favor of saving money!)
