Shades of Hitchcock!!
A Review of Up at the Villa

by Nonia Bidness

Pros: excellent cast, beautiful lush scenery and settings, a chilling story.
Cons: won't make it to the big screen in too many cities.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals no details about the movie's plot.

Another pleasant surprise at our local art theatre!! We go there often for diversion, since we can go cheaply as members of the Columbia Film Society, and they offer a variety of films we'll never get to see on the big screen otherwise. Sadly, films with limited distribution don't make it to our small town.

If you are not a fan of Kristen Scott Thomas or Anne Bancroft, though I can scarcely imagine anyone who isn't, this might not have the same wonderful impact for you as it did for me. Sean Penn, a seasoned and skilled actor, is cast in a familiar type of role for him; he is sort of like Jack Nicholson in that way - he just LOOKS like such a jerk that we don't have any trouble believing him when he plays a less than completely savory character. This film featured flawless acting from every single member of the cast, and there was a nice assembly of talent in this one. I particularly enjoyed Anne Bancroft's lusty and sophisticated Princess San Fernandino; she alone was worth the price of admission.

It is set in 1938 Italy, and there is beautiful cinematography, rich and lush scenery and settings. The story could have taken place anywhere, and it is not really dependent on this historical time and country for its intrigue, but I do think the air of unease and impending chaos lent a little chilling edge. Based on a novella by W. Somerset Maugham (who is described as having a deep knowledge of shallow people), and directed by Philip Haas (Angels and Insects), the movie started out with a great foundation.

I was reminded of Hitchcock throughout, as my stomach gripped in tense discomfort. I found it all very believable and remarkably well done. I identified closely with Kristen Scott Thomas's character, I could well have worn her shoes and done exactly as she did.

I am so tempted to write some spoilers, as there is a lot I'd love to comment about in this film, but I really try to be brief and mysterious when reviewing films I love. . . see for yourself!!

Video Occasion: Fit for Friday evening.
