Synopsis

This drama is set in Auckland, New Zealand and follows a crucial period in the life of the Heke family. Father Jake is a very violent man, beating up people in the local pub as well as his wife at home. Still he clearly loves his wife and family. Mother Beth tries to keep the family together and raise their children to the best of her abilities. We see how this violent behavior influences the children: one of their sons is joining a street gang and another is about to be put in a foster home. However it is daughter Grace, seemingly untouched by her surroundings, who is influenced most of all. This is a very powerful drama with some great performances. Director Lee Tamahori went on to make hollywood movies such as Along Came a Spider and Die Another Day. Temuera Morrison later starred in movies such as Speed 2, Six Days Seven Nights, and Star Wars episode II and III. The movie has a sequel, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted, which in most countries went direct to video.
