DVD and Blu-ray Releases for March 11th, 2014

March 10th, 2014

If you look over at Amazon.com, the best-selling new release of the week is The Book Thief. This film made just over $20 million at the box office, which is amazing for a limited release. However, it is still a limited release on top of the new releases. That tells you how slow this week is on the home market. Fortunately, last Friday The Hunger Games: Catching Fire came out on DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack and I'm including it on this week's list as well. There are a number of other releases that are worth picking up, including The Patience Stone on DVD, In Fear on DVD, and Inside Llewyn Davis on Blu-ray. However, while there is some competition, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on Blu-ray Combo Pack is the Pick of the Week. More...

Featured Blu-ray review - Samson and Delilah

March 7th, 2014

This will be a short review. Samson and Delilah made its DVD debut less than a year a ago and I reviewed it then. This week, it makes its Blu-ray debut. My opinion of the movie hasn't changed since then, but how does the Blu-ray look and sound compared to the DVD? More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for April 23rd, 2013

April 23rd, 2013

This time of year tends to be really bad on the home market. By this late in spring, there are only a few late winter releases still finding their way on the home market. Last weekend it was Django Unchained and next weekend it will be Silver Linings Playbook. This week, there are no such releases. The best selling release according to Amazon.com is Jurassic Park, which makes its home market 3D debut. (It is still in the top ten at the box office, so that might be helping the sales.) I hope to get a screener to review but so far it is late, so I'm not sure if the 3D upgrade is worth the triple-dip. As far as Pick of the Week Contenders, there are not many. The Impossible is probably the best bet, but I'm still waiting for the screener. The week is so bad, that I took the time to review Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Three on Blu-ray a week in advance, just so I would have something to choose as Pick of the Week this week. It is expensive, but there are several classic episodes that aired this season and there is a ton of new extras on the six-disc set. More...

Featured DVD Review: Samson and Delilah

April 17th, 2013

Samson and Delilah was a Bible Epic made more than 60 years ago. Despite being a huge hit at the time (it was the biggest hit of the year and one of the biggest hits of the decade) it has never been released on DVD. That changed earlier this year, but has the film aged well? The Bible Epic is a genre that has fallen out of favor with moviegoers. And if it does holdup, does the DVD do it justice? More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for March 12th, 2013

March 13th, 2013

There are not many first run releases coming out on the home market this week, but two of them, Life of Pi and Rise of the Guardians, rose to Pick of the Week status. For that honor, we have to turn to an older release, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, which celebrated its 25th Anniversary by coming out on Blu-ray for the first time. Yes, it is shovelware, but it is still the best movie on this week's list. If you don't have the DVD already and really don't like Pan & Scan, you might want to wait till Disney fixes the mix-up with the DVD portion of the Combo Pack. More...
