Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Home Market Numbers: Jurassic Eats Up the Competition

There were a handful of new releases for the week of October 20th that reached the top 30 on the combined DVD and Blu-ray chart for October 25th. However, only one of them really matters: Jurassic World. The film opened in first place, obviously, selling 2.34 million units and generating $54.58 million in total sales. Dollarwise, this is nearly as much as The Avengers: Age of Ultron has sold so far, while its units sold puts the film in ninth place for the year. Per Theater Chart: Profitable Start for Prophet

There were only two films in the $10,000 club on the per theater chart, but while it wasn't a crowded field this week, the two films had nearly identical averages. Kahlil Gibran's the Prophet led the way with an average of $13,718 in two theaters. Meanwhile, The Diary of a Teenage Girl was right behind with an average of $13,084 in four. More...

Weekend Wrap-Up: Mission Still Fantastic, Four Flops

Despite what conventional wisdom was predicting, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation remained in first place, as Fantastic Four missed even our low expectations. The Gift also did well, but the other two wide releases opened on the low end of expectations. Overall, the box office fell 8.3% from last weekend down to $132 million, so according to that number, it is safe to say summer is fading fast. Worse still, compared to last year, the box office was 29% lower, which is terrible and a clear sign that summer is already over. Granted, 2015 still has a solid lead over 2014, at $6.88 billion to $6.51 billion. A lead of 5.7% at this time of year is great and it would take an epic collapse for that to disappear anytime soon. I don't think 2015 will bounce back and start padding its lead any time soon, but I also don't think it will have 29% deficits week after week either. More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Resurrecting Limited Releases

It could be a really good week in limited release, as there are several films earning great reviews and loud buzz. Leading the way in raw size is Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection "F", which could become one of the biggest Anime hits of all time, at least Stateside. Other films with a shot at thriving in limited release include Cop Car and The Diary of a Teenage Girl, but they are not the only films worth checking out. More...
