Polly Wants the Number One Position?

March 16, 2004

Without an international breakout hit, the domestic slowdown is still affecting the international box-office. This week a single massive opening in a major market could have put a film in the top five. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. But a string of strong openings helped push Along Came Polly into first place with $12.4 million. It's still early in its international run, but with $40.2 million so far and with some big markets left it should beat its domestic total.

11 Oscar win didn't help Lord of the Rings: Return of the King's international box office, but a massive opening in China did. It took just one weekend for Return of the King to top The Two Towers total run, $3.4 million to $2.9 million. Thanks to that amazing performance, Return of the King saw its weekend total increase more than 10% to $10.7 million. The films totals now sit at $695.6 million internationally and $1.07 billion worldwide.

It was a $100 million weekend for Something's Gotta Give, which earned $7.4 million and third place on this week's chart. That was more than enough to push its international total past $100 million, which now sits at $103.5. It should beat it's domestic total shortly before finishing north of $250 million.

While Brother Bear's box office dropped to $6.2 million, it managed to move up one spot on the International Charts, which just enforces the weakness in the movie industry. The film also crossed $100 million internationally this weekend, and is performing better than expected. $150 million internationally should be obtainable.

Scary Movie 3 dropped another place this weekend earning just $4.4 million. It is still on pace to break $200 million worldwide by next weekend.
